Period Research

History of decor, styles, and movements in art and architecture. A deep dive into the historical and cultural context of a specific time period, examining how societal norms, fashion, art styles, and political events influenced arhitectual styles, construction methods, and design elements within that era, allowing students to accurately portray characters and settings on stage from a given period.

Introduction to Scenic Painting

Introduction to painting scenery for the theatre; methods and materials. In this course students will learn the techniques of creating faux textures including, but not limited to, marble, bricks, wood, and fabric. Additionally, students will study, distressing, and antiquing.

Intro To Scene Design

Introduction to the history, processes, materials, and concepts involved in designing scenery for the theatre.

Advanced Topics in Scene Design

Design emphasis on a variety of production techniques, genre, and styles. Students will explore design solutions for shows requiring multiple locales. Students will also be introduced to shows reflecting a variety of dramatic styles and will explore effective design solutions within stylistic constraints. In addition to previously introduced graphic skills, emphasis will be placed on graphic techniques involved in the production of scenery, including design drafting, prop drawings, and paint elevations.

Performance and Society

Performance & Society introduces theatre and performance as artistic practice, creative action, a way of knowing, and a record and unfolding of culture.

Women in Theatre

A study of theatre practice and dramatic literature as informed by issues of gender, race, and ethnic background. The focus will be on 20th century developments of women and theater. Feminist theory and theatrical practice will be a focus of the course and will reflect conflicts and differences present within feminism.

The Art of The Theatre

A survey of all aspects of the living art of the theatre. Students learn about Western performance traditions alongside traditions happening elsewhere in the world in the same time period within political contexts, to create a global perspective of theatre.

TEACHING GOALS and PRACTICES

Emphasizing the human history of art practice and seek open-mindedness. 

Understanding that students come from diverse background and have differing learning needs.

Encouraging students to establish an open dialogue between their artwork and the work of others.  

Teaching technical skills and material knowledge. This approach benefits conceptual thinkers to have the technical abilities to realize their vision and create their reality

Helping students develop a language to describe visualizations in color theory, composition, proportion, and other elements of design, etc.

Teaching with a historical understanding but analyzing through both a historic and contemporary lens.

Provide students with research methods as a process, aiding in future projects.

Facilitate and encourage engagement with peer critique; describing what they see, analyzing the principles used in a given work, and interpreting the communication with viewers. Give and receive feedback.
